With Captain America: Civil War on our screens, it’s time to choose a side. Here’s how Team Cap is shaping up;
Steve Rogers/ Captain America
After finally beginning to feel settled in the modern age, Cap has found himself in a new heap of trouble, this time in the form of the government instead of Aliens or an evil AI.
After leading his new Avengers team after the events of Age of Ultron, Cap’s previous mission regarding his old pal/new villain Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Soldier has caught up with him.
The post credit scene of Ant-Man showed us that Cap has finally found his old friend and the Civil War trailer confirms that Bucky seems have put his Winter Soldier past behind him, much to the delight of Cap.
We know that Civil War will primarily focus on government sanctions against superheroes, a debate which ultimately splits the Avengers causing the war. Mix that with Cap siding with a known assassin in Bucky, Steve has found himself in a tight spot, one that will certainly significantly shift his story in the future of the MCU.
Cap is a man out of time, struggling to find a home in the modern world. Once he finally feels settled with his new family of the Avengers, they split, leaving him broken again and clinging to the last piece that still feels like home, Bucky.
Out of all the characters in the film, Steve’s fate is the most unknown. Both the Russo brothers and Marvel President have confirmed that Civil War will ‘significantly’ alter the dynamics of the MCU and a major shift to Cap’s story could certainly start that off. Only time will tell.
Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier
Having seemingly been rid of his Winter Soldier persona, Bucky Barnes is back with old friend Steve ready to right his wrongs and help Cap when Iron Man and the government come knocking.
The Russo Brothers have described this film as a psychological thriller and it’s more than likely a lot of this will be down to Bucky. After spending the best part of seventy years being frozen and woken up again to murder high profile good guys, Bucky is bound to feel a bit out of place stepping back into the game.
He has the added pressure of being the most wanted man on the planet, as well as trying to convince those chasing him, as well as himself, that he’s not the Winter Soldier anymore.
This will be huge theme to this film and looks like one Cap and others may even fight for.The future is unknown for Bucky, with Sebastian Stan apparently having several more movies tied to his contract, it looks likely we’ll see him again in some capacity in the future.
Sam Wilson/Falcon
After establishing himself as full time Avenger, Sam Wilson aka The Falcon finds himself once again caught up in whatever trouble his partner Cap has gotten into.
Not that Sam minds however, the duo have shared a long running partnership in the comics which looks set to be echoed through the MCU.
Siding with Cap in Civil War is a huge risk for the Falcon with much of his career and life being on the line. Falcon more than anyone knows just how much Bucky means to Steve though and it wouldn’t have been hard for him to choose his side. After all, he just does what Cap does, just a little slower.
Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch
Being one of the most powerful members of the Avengers, Scarlet Witch will be an important part in the Civil War battle. However, directors Joe and Anthony Russo have confirmed that this MCU Wanda isn’t quite up to her comics self just yet.
At her full power, Scarlet Witch could end Civil War with a bang but these are still early steps for her in the world of being a hero. Either way she is a forced to be reckoned with and Cap will be grateful for having her on his side nonetheless.
It was almost certain she would fall on the side of Captain America, especially after her past anger with Tony Stark, regarding the death of her parents.
It’s likely we’ll see a bit more of why she chose to stick with Cap in the actual film as well her relationship with the Vision, with whom she marries in the comics.
As for her future role in the MCU, she has already been confirmed for an appearance in at least one Avengers: Infinity War movie so we know she comes out of Civil War unscathed but hopefully fans will get to see her before then in another Phase Three film.
Clint Barton/Hawkeye
It will definitely be interesting to see how Hawkeye fits into the Civil War format, having neither really been extra friendly with either Cap or Iron Man in any of his previous outings.
What a lot of fans are looking forward to with this film is to see Hawkeye coming face to face with best friend Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow. What this will do to their friendship is hard to tell though I imagine it would be hard to puncture after everything they’ve been through together.
Clint took almost a centre role for a large portion of Age of Ultron so hopefully this will carry on into Civil War.
As for his future, this is another one which is difficult to predict. It’s likely he’ll take a step back once more after Civil War until his likely appearance in at least one Avengers: Infinity War films.
Scott Lang/Ant-Man
After helping save the world on his own against the nefarious Yellow Jacket, Scott steps up once more to the big leagues by joining Team Cap.
In the Ant-Man post credit scene, fans were shown a glimpse of Captain America: Civil War where we see that Cap and Falcon have found Bucky and have him captured. After discussing some plans, Falcon coolly suggests that “he knows a guy…” referencing our miniature hero after their run in during the film.
Because of this, we can expect Scott to play a significant role in Civil War if Team Cap is actively seeking him out.
In the comics, Ant-Man is a huge player in the world of the Avengers, being a founding member under several of his hero aliases.
It will definitely be a treat for fans then to see him again so soon after his own film. It’s likely his character and his abilities will be shown even further here and hopefully it starts to integrate him into the MCU universe as thoroughly as he is in the comic universe.
A sequel to Ant-Man has already been confirmed for 2018, starring Evangeline Lilly’s The Wasp, so we know Scott will walk out unharmed from Civil War. As for his own MCU future, it’s more than likely we’ll see him appear in at least one of the Avengers: Infinity War films if not both.
Depending on the outcome of Civil War, it’s possible Scott could become a fully fledged member of the Avengers but we won’t know until the film arrives on April 29th.
