We all love a good Netflix and chill; a romantic comedy, maybe a documentary. But sometimes, we just want the pleasant, disobedient air of a gambling movie, whether it be slick or gritty!
So, in the mass of films available on Netflix (a total of 34,739 hours according to Automatedinsights.com), we’ve braved the back catalogue to bring you our 5 favourite gambling themed movies that Netflix has to offer!
If you’re not out braving the real world movie theatre tonight for Black Panther, we’ve got you covered for your home screen!
5. Win It All
One of the ever more brilliant Netflix originals; Win It All stars Jake Johnson (you’ll have likely seen him in New Girl), the beautiful Aislinn Derbez, Joe Lo Truglio (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Superbad, Pineapple Express, and so many more…) and an always brilliant performance from Keegan-Michael Key (Let’s Be Cops, Archer, Get Out, Modern Family).
Jake Johnson stars as Eddie who, after losing $50,000 that wasn’t his, sees his life get ever more interesting.
But in the end, he comes out on top. We won’t tell you how, so you’ll just have to watch it!
This movie has a pleasant, light hearted feel throughout all Eddie’s mishaps and is a great late night chiller to kick back with a few drinks to. Here are some of the world’s favourites to get you started!
4. What Happens In Vegas
This flick features a truly star-studded cast, starring Cameron Diaz (Sex Tape, Gangs of New York, Charlie’s Angels, Kill Bill), Ashton Kutcher (Dude Where’s My Car, Two and a Half Men, The Butterfly Effect) and Rob Corddry (Hot Tub Time Machine, Ballers, Hawaii Five-0).
After a night of intense partying and hitting the Vegas casino tables, two strangers awaken to find they have gotten married! Obviously, a shock to both of them!
A pleasantly slick, relationship comedy.
3. Hoodlum
Released in 1997, this gangland epic features Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix, John Wick 2, Hannibal), Tim Roth (Pulp Fiction, Planet of the Apes, The Hateful Eight), Vanessa Williams (Shaft, Eraser, Modern Family, Desperate Housewives).
This film, based on real life events, sees black gangs in 1930’s New York City battle the Italian mob for control of the numbers racket in Harlem.
This one definitely hits the gritty end of the spectrum! Starring a truly brilliant performance from Laurence Fishburne.
2. The Gambler
With a title like that, it just had to be included. Starring Jessica Lange (Cape Fear, King Kong Lives, Prozac Nation), John Goodman (10 Cloverfield Lane, Flight, Transformers: The Last Night), and Mark Wahlberg (The Fighter, The Departed, Ted, Daddy’s Home) – He’s also known to enjoy the casino in his real life.
We see Mark Wahlberg star as Jim Bennet, a professor with huge gambling debts who plots to win big by persuading a basketball star, who also happens to be one of his students, to shave points during a game.
This film beautifully combines sleek production with the gritty underground casino world.
1. Donnie Brasco
This film is an absolute classic. Featuring a younger Al Pacino (The Godfather, Scarface, Serpico), an even younger Johnny Depp (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Blow, Secret Window) and Michael Madsen (Kill Bill, Reservoir Dogs, The Hateful Eight).
Johnny Depp stars as Joe Pistone, an FBI agent who goes undercover to infiltrate the Italian mob in Harlem. He then finds himself starting to identify with the men he’s been sent to take down!
This is dark, gritty, magical, timelessly classic brilliance at its best! If you haven’t seen this one already, it should at the top of your watch list right now!
So, that’s our list of the top feature films we’ve found on Netflix at the moment! If you’re looking for something a little more real life, we’d highly recommend KidPoker!
