With Marvel doing what they know with their incredibly successful shared universe, Fox have their own axe and stone ready to carve out their own carefully crafted universe with their X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises.
The X-Men franchise has been great to them, and vice versa, and there’s little doubt that X-Men: Apocalypse will increase this value.
Between this, Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s final Wolverine appearance, we can’t dismiss Channing Tatum’s upcoming starring role in Gambit, which is currently scheduled for an October 2016 release.
There was speculation for months, but last year, it was finally confirmed that the star of Magic Mike (and it’s sequel Magic Mike XXL) Channing Tatum would be playing the role of Gambit, the card-playing mutant loved by many.
Since he became attached to the flick, Channing Tatum has been working strongly as a producer to get the movie made. Like Ryan Reynolds did with Deadpool, Tatum has fronted the project with patience and resilience. Of course, the difference with Deadpool was that from day one, a director was on board.
Heroic Hollywood founder and editor-in-chief Umberto Gonzalez claimed that Tatum has approached Foxcatcher (also starring Tatum)’s Bennett Miller and Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler, Black Swan) to front the Gambit movie.
Unfortunately, they turned it down. This wouldn’t normally be an issue but as Fox has scheduled a release date for the movie, importance of finding a director for the project had increased in order for the movie to begin shooting this autumn, this way, post-production could be finished in time for next October. Of course, a movie could be pushed back, but history has shown that lost momentum on a movie’s fruition can be hard to get back.
Positive news though, according to Entertainment Weekly, Tatum’s search has come to an end. Fox has reportedly locked down Rupert Wyatt, who directed 2011’s Rise Of The Planet Of the Apes and 2014’s The Gambler to helm Gambit.
There are currently no other details on the film, but Wyatt’s history is known which can make this project either amazing, or very bad.
Gambit is the next movie in the long line of X-Men spin-offs that have wrestled to undo the damage done by X-Men Origins: Wolverine, where both he and Deadpool’s Wade Wilson appeared. If Fox’s recent track record is a sign, we’ll be in for a real treat.
