Martin Scorsese’s latest film The Wolf of Wall Street has been eagerly anticipated for months, and with the rumours surrounding the doubts over its completion disintegrating, film fans worldwide have had their expectations reassured.
Scorsese has extended his film from the initial 2 hour 45 minute run-time to 2 hours and 59 minutes – presumably so that the film can be categorized as ‘under 3 hours’.
The Wolf of Wall Street will become Scorsese’s longest film to date, trumping his previous 2 hour and 58 minute Casino.
Although the film has only been extended by 14 minutes, it may have the potential to alter the viewer’s response to the entire movie.
A screening time of 2 hours and 45 minutes for a film is bound to push the viewer close to the edge of patience but it’s almost certain that onlookers will become bored and tedious sitting in front of the screen for near on 3 hours – besides, there is only so long you can watch a money-hungry broker throw his life away.
Headlining Hollywood stars like Leonardo DiCaprio, Matthew McConaughey and Jonah Hill, along with the experienced guidance of one of the greatest directors of our time, there is little doubt this film will be a success.
Whether it will be as successful as some of Scorsese’s previous classics – Goodfellas, Taxi Driver and Raging Bull – I guess we will have to wait and see…
