Toy Story 4 slammed as racist

Toy Story 4, the long awaited final instalment“ in the 24-year franchise, has smashed global box office records for animated movies.

Over the weekend it earned $238m (£187m) and performed particularly well in Latin America and Europe but fell short in the North America and China.

The new child star of the movie is Bonnie, who had created her own favourite toy, “Forky”, from pieces of rubbish.

Forky is shown as suffering an existential crisis since he identifies with trash rather than playthings.

Enter cowboy hero Woodie (voiced by Tom Hanks) to teach Forky all about being a toy.

Another theme of the flick is innocent love, with Woodie is reunited with his girlfriend Bo Peep.

She is meant to bring some feminist credentials to the work as a porcelain kick-ass version of Lara Croft.

But acclaimed writer and performer Stella Duffy has slammed Disney, for omitting black characters from the film and failing to give females a credible role.

Speaking on a BBC Radio 4 review show Stella, 56, said: “I’m the Grinch who hated it.

“Seriously, it’s 2019! What on earth are Disney doing having a film that has no leads that are black characters.

“Yes, there are black actors, but they are yellow and they are green and they are plush!

“How can they possibly think that it’s alright now?

“Yeah, maybe in 1995 – which was also wrong then, as well, actually – but now, to be serious, where every single humanoid toy, is white? It’s just shocking!”

Asked about the credentials of Bo Peep, Stella said: “Okay, let’s talk about the white feminism on display here.

“Oh look! Bo-Peep’s a feminist.

“No she’s not! She’s still going to fall in love, she’s still going to have the happily ever after, that’s not feminism!

“It’s a woman who kicks off her skirt to reveal bloomers. Had a couple of thoughts… and does some high wire acts.

“And it’s disablist! It covers ALL bases!

“It looks good – but Disney is supposed to LOOK good. There has to be content to the story too!”
