Hit Playstation 3 game The Last of Us is set to be turned into a film after plans were announced by Naughty Dog.
The game follows the story of Joel who is trying to smuggle 14 year old Ellie out of the city while trying to survive the constant struggles of a post apocalyptic world infested with fungi zombies.
The game sold 3.4 million copies and was number one in the UK sales chart for six weeks.
Critics praised the team behind the game for their excellent story telling skills.
Clint Culpepper, the president of Screen Gems said “When I saw the quality of the storytelling, I knew the audience for this project was far greater than just the gaming community and that Neil Druckmann must write the screenplay.”
The creative director of the game, Neil Druckmann will be writing the script for the film and the creative architects will also be members of the original team including Evan Wells and Cristophe Balestra.
The Last of Us is not the first video game to have plans to be turned into a film, but because most have failed to live up to their game originals, fans of The Last of Us are feeling nervous.
Some game/films that didn’t do particularly well include Doom, The Prince of Persia and Super Mario Bros.
But arguably, anybody who has played The Last of Us will know that playing the game itself is almost like following a film because of the long cut scenes. But they work, and keep you on the edge of your seat, rooting for the characters to reach safety.
So if the game can hold your attention so well with simple cut scenes made to add atmosphere to the game, with such a talented team creating a screen play, the film promises to be a hit.
