Star Wars icon Yoda is rumoured to be getting his own spin-off movie as part of Disney’s plans to push the sci-fi franchise into the future.

The entertainment giant confirmed they will release a new series of films yearly from 2015.

Beginning with the first in a trilogy continuing the space saga.

But between the three episodes will be two stand-alone films featuring characters from the Star Wars universe, such as much-loved tiny green guru Yoda.

Disney paid creator George Lucas £2.5billion for his Lucasfilm company last year.

His first Star Wars film Episode IV: A New Hope — introducing Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader — was released in 1977.

Episode VII will have Star Trek director JJ Abrams at the helm. Episode VIII will hit screens in 2017 and Episode IX in 2019.

Lucas has said that original stars Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher were ‘in the final stages of negotiation’ to re-appear.
