The seventh Star Wars film has officially been named as The Force Awakens.

JJ Abram’s hugely-anticipated sequel had its supporting name revealed via the Star Wars website yesterday.

The title does not include Episode VII which suggests that LucasFilm and Disney are keen to shy away from the original six-film franchise and start afresh with an individual name.

The film’s plot is still not yet known but the timeline is said to be set thirty years after the events of Return of the Jedi.

Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Harrison Ford (Han Solo) and Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia) are amongst the original cast reprising their roles alongside newcomers John Boyega, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Daisy Ridley, Andy Serkis and Max Von Sydow.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be released in cinemas on December 18th 2015.
