Spider-Man will officially join Marvel’s Cinematic Universe after a deal was made by Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment.
The landmark news means that the web-slinging superhero will be appearing in future Marvel films alongside Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and more.
His first appearance is likely to be in one of the upcoming Marvel spin-offs with a new Spider-Man film to follow on July 28th, 2017.
Despite the new deal, Sony Pictures will continue to finance and have creative control over the future Spider-Man films.
However, early reports have indicated that current Peter Parker/Spider-Man actor Andrew Garfield won’t be reprising his role from the Amazing Spider-Man films.
On the news, Walt Disney Company chairman Bob Iger said: “Spider-Man is one of Marvel’s great characters, beloved around the world.
“We’re thrilled to work with Sony Pictures to bring the iconic web-slinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which opens up fantastic new opportunities for storytelling and franchise building.”
Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman Michael Lynton added: “We always want to collaborate with the best and most successful filmmakers to grow our franchises and develop our characters.
“Marvel, Kevin Feige and Amy, who helped orchestrate this deal, are the perfect team to help produce the next chapter of Spider-Man. This is the right decision for the franchise, for our business, for Marvel, and for the fans.”
The new arrangement means that Disney are rescheduling the release dates for some of the upcoming Marvel films. This includes Thor: Ragnorak from July 28th, 2017 to November 3rd, 2017 and Black Panther from November 3rd, 2017 to July 6th, 2018.
