A new entry in the Alien series is in development with District 9’s Neill Blomkamp set to direct.

20th Century Fox is funding the project and Ridley Scott, who helmed the original Alien, is on board as producer.

Blomkamp confirmed that the film has been greenlit with an Instagram post on Wednesday, sharing an illustration of the series’ iconic Xenomorph creature along with a short message.

“So I think this is officially my next film,” he wrote.

Reports suggest that the next Alien movie will take place after Scott’s upcoming Prometheus sequel, which has been slated for release next year.

Sigourney Weaver, who appeared in four Alien films between 1979 and 1997, is believed to be interested in reprising her role as Ellen Ripley in Blomkamp’s project, should the story allow it.

Weaver worked with the South African–Canadian director on his latest film Chappie, which is due for release on 6th March.
