Batman fans have allowed their mind’s to wonder when it comes to Jared Leto’s appearance as the Joker in next year’s film ‘Suicide Squad’, directed by David Ayer (End of Watch, Street Kings and Sabotage). However, no one was prepared for the radical photos revealed last week.

Twitter users got their first look at Leto in character last Friday, becoming an instant meme. The menacing single purple glove, the steel grill like teeth and the character motifs inked all over his body. The word ‘damaged’ tattooed on his forehead, a clear signs of inner torment– a hand which the Joker has in the past kept hidden.

Naturally, this is not everyone’s tastes. Though many have found it strange, others have voiced their annoyance, some even threatening to boycott the film.

Criticised by those who prefer the more alluding, clean-cut portrayal by Jack Nicholson in Batman (1989) which was also compared at the time to its predecessor the vintage version by Cesar Romero, on the Adam West TV series. Ayer, who is known for his hard-hitting street crime films, is believed however, to be acclimatising the villain to a new style and universe – one that could exist in the darkest corners of the world as we know it.

Albeit a gritty spin the source is undoubtedly the same – literally tattooed all over him!

Yet, a matters of days after the photo has been released MoviePilot have alleged it was purely a publicity stunt to celebrate 75 years of the Joker’s character in comics.

To add to the legitimacy of the rumours two photos have since been leaked of Jared on set minus a face full of tats. As well as a tweet from Gabriel Gray (No, not Sylar), claiming to be an industry insider,

“Here’s something that might be of interest to you comic book fans. The promo picture of Leto in SuicideSquad isn’t what he’ll look like…”

However, with the twitter account set to private and the account holder sharing their name with Zachary Quinto’s character from Heroes. Fans are left waiting and wondering whether this has all just been one big joke!
