Hamilton, the hit broadway show, is about to making its way from the stage, to our screens. Blending hip-hop, swing, and other genres unexpected in a musical, to tell the story of America’s founding father, Alexander Hamilton, the much loved musical will finally be able to be seen by fans around the world.
Since the musical opened, tickets have been difficult to obtain, due to both the popularity of the actual musical, and its cast. It’s rumoured that in 2016, some tickets sold by scalpers may have sold for as much as $10,000.
The musicals director, Tommy Kail, directed the original cast, including Lin-Manuel Miranda, and has also directed them for the movie. Alongside Miranda, we will also see Leslie Odom Jr., Jonathan Groff, Phillipa Soo, Daveed Diggs, Christopher Jacks, and Renee Elise Goldsberry.
The film will be of the original stage performance, unlike the more cinematic retellings we’ve seen for Rent, Les Miserables, and most recently, Cats. Three live performances, a few weeks before the original cast left, were filmed, along with set up shots without the audience.
It’s expected that this means the footage will involve various angles, and deliver a cinematic experience whilst keeping the show on stage.
Disney’s CEO and chairman, Bob Iger, told Variety ‘Lin-Manuel Miranda created an unforgettable theatre experience and a true cultural phenomenon, and it was for good reason that Hamilton was hailed as an astonishing work of art, all who saw it with the original cast will never forget that singular experience.
‘And we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to share this same Broadway experience with millions of people around the world.’.
Although Miranda originally tweeted that the movie would be in theatres in October of 2021, fans have been surprised to find out it will instead be released on July 3rd of this year, on the new streaming site Disney+.
