The hilarious 80s classic, Coming to America, is finally getting a sequel. Eddie Murphy has confirmed that he will reprise his role as the lovable Prince Akeem.

The original movie, directed by John Landis, focused on Prince Akeem’s undercover search for true love in New York after escaping an arranged marriage. But it’s still unclear what the sequel will be about. Considering the details Murphy has mentioned so far, it looks set to be a worthy follow-up to the original.

The actor announced that Craig Brewer will direct the long-awaited sequel whilst Kenya Barris, creator of the sitcom Black-ish, will be in charge of writing the screenplay.

It’s been over 30 years since Murphy starred in Coming to America, at the peak of his popularity but it’s remained a memorable favourite for lovers of comedy.

In a statement the actor said he’s looking forward to bringing all the original’s beloved characters back to the big screen.

“After many years of anticipation, I’m thrilled that Coming to America 2 is officially moving forward

“We’ve assembled a great team that will be led by Craig Brewer, who just did an amazing job on Dolemite [Is My Name], and I’m looking forward to bringing all these classic and beloved characters back to the big screen.”
