Following the over night success of Netflix’s Bird Box, it’s now been revealed that a sequel is in the works.
The movie focused on Malorie Hayes, played by Sandra Bullock, as she navigated a post apocalyptic world with her two children, trying to keep them all safe from monster who are able to make people kill themselves on sight.
It became an instant success upon its 2018 release, inspiring YouTube challenges, and keeping people on Twitter busy with analysis and theory discussions.
The screenplay was written by Eric Heisserer, based on a novel by Josh Malerman.
Malarian recently spoke to Inverse, and told them of the sequel “I can’t say much, but I can say that it is in development. Sometimes it’s weird, all this secrecy, but I’m game.”.
The author is currently promoting his own sequel novel, Malorie, giving fans hope that the sequel will be again based off of Malerman’s work.
Although the book isn’t available until July 21, the synopsis may hold some hints as to what we could see in the Netflix sequel.
Set twelve years after the original events, we’ll be seeing Malorie’s children as teenagers.
It’s also teased in the books synopsis that “someone very dear to her, someone she believed dead, may be alive.”, leading to speculation we may see a familiar face from the first book, or possibly the introduction of a new character.
It’s still entirely possible though, that the film makers may decide to take a Netflix sequel in an different direction all together.
Many fans are curious as to the events immediately following the end of the movie, and would surely love to a follow up that begins where we left off.
Whatever happens, following the hype gained by Bird Box, a sequel is sure to be a hit.
