The much-coveted role of Queen singer Freddie Mercury has finally been filled. British actor Ben Whishaw (Skyfall, Cloud Atlas) will play the legendary musician in the upcoming biopic which has yet to be titled.

Whishaw secured the role after months of speculation following the earlier departure of original choice Sacha Baron Cohen in the summer.

The film will also be helmed by actor-turned-director Dexter Fletcher (Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, Wild Bill) who had negotiated with the band about directing it.

The story will target Queen’s rise in the music industry and will end with them performing their successful Live Aid performance at Wembley in 1985.

But it will not deal with the singer’s tragic death from AIDs in 1991.

The script will be penned by Peter Morgan with the film being produced by GK Films’ Graham King.

Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal’s Tribeca Productions and Queen Films are also involved in the highly-anticipated project.

The biopic is likely to be released in cinemas sometime in 2015.
