In celebration of Global Scouse Day happening on Saturday 28th February, Purple Revolver went to Scouse hairdressing and barber favourite Voodou to film a few members of staff telling us their favourite Scouse words. There are a lot of “bosses” and “ooers” with a few old beloveds chucked in for good measure.
From top dog Rob Webb to the birds and lads on the shop floor, everyone had a laugh taking part in creating the short one minute video showing the rest of the world that the language of Scouse is a little trickier than you would think.
For example, take the word “beaut”. Don’t you dare call someone a beaut in Liverpool. You don’t want to give off the wrong impression. Let’s just say it’s another way of saying that word beginning with T. Or, look at “sound”. Yes, it literally means something that you hear. However, inside the city lines and the immediate areas surrounding it, it means okay or alright, but in a positive way as well as meaning good when describing someone or something. We’re a lovely bunch of positive souls – most of the time, unless you do our heads in. We like to say “like” a lot too, like all the time.
Global Scouse Day was founded by Graham Hughes, a British adventurer, film-maker, television presenter and Guinness World Record holder. He says, “Everyone has their own idea of what Scouse should be.” He’s talking about our much loved dish. Our idea of Scouse also is that we’re a boss city with sound people which is exactly why we love celebrating this day just for us – as well as letting the rest of the world join the party in their kitchens and restaurants. We’re good like that.
Look out for loads of events happening around town this weekend in Liverpool ONE, Berry & Rye, Maggie Mays, Lucha Libre and more.
