Liverpool is well known for its Scouse language and popular sayings. In celebration of Global Scouse Day with events planned across the city, we have been on the hunt for some of the best Scouse words.

Read thoroughly if you’re planning a visit to the best city in the North West because you’re going to need this dictionary to survive.

1 Man – Adult Male

Scouse saying – Lid, La, Lad, Kidda, Auld fella

Usage: “Alright Lid, you going the footy with ya auld fella?”

2 Woman – Adult Female

Scouse sayings: Bird, Love, Me’ma (mum)

Usage: “I’m taking me bird out later for a bevvie”

3 Fake

Scouse sayings: Blag, Jarg

Usage: “Them trabs (trainers) are blag”

4 Generic proclamations of positivity

Scouse saying – Go ‘ed, is right, nice one, boss, well in, sound, belter, made up

Usage: “Go ‘ed lad, pass me the football, nice one!”

5 Generic proclamation of negativity

Scouse sayings – eeeee! devoed, sly, slack

Usuage: “Eeeeee! That’s proper slack that, mate”

6 Avoid – To stay away from someone/something

Scouse saying – Swerve, Sack that

Usage: “Swerve that mate the 5-0 (police) are around”

7 Non Scouser – a person from Runcorn, Wirral, Southport, St Helens etc; specifically from provincial town outside of Liverpool

Scouse saying – Wool, Woolyback

Usage: “Have you heard the way that wool talks?”

8 Generic term to add on to anything

Scouse saying – Like

Usage: “I was chatting to mi ma like, do’ya know what I mean like?”

9 Busy

Scouse saying – Chokka, Rammed

Usage: “I’m chokka this week la”

10 Cigarette

Scouse saying – Cigg, Bifta

Usage: “You got a light for ma bifta, mate?”

11 Beer

Scouse sayings – Ale, Bevvie, Jar

Usage: “Gonna go pub for a bevvie, lid”

12 Off Licence

Scouse sayings – Offie

Usage: “Off to the offie for some jars”

13 Shoes

Scouse sayings – Trabs

Usage: “The trabs are minty (smelly/dirty)”

14 Old fashioned

Scouse sayings – Antwaky

Usage: “Ma nan’s curtains are proper antwaky”

15 Generic Insults

Scouse sayings – Blurt, Beaut, Whooper, Weapon, Soft Lad

Usage: “He’s a right soft lad ‘im”

16 Food

Scouse sayings – Scan

Usage: “Going Maccie’s for some scran me”

17 Sun glasses/Spectacles

Scouse sayings – Gigs, Shades

Usage: “Them shades are blag, mate”

18 Ice Lolly

Scouse sayings – Lolly Ice

Usage: “Going down shop for a lolly ice, lad”

19 Asda – Supermarket

Scouse sayings – The Asda

Usage:” Going down The Asda with me bird for some scran”

20 Hospital

Scouse sayings – The Ozzy

Usage: “Going down The Ozzy la, think I’ve broke my toe”
