Is there a more fitting setting for two of Britain’s finest film critics, Simon Mayo and Mark Kermode, to expound lyrically on their thoughts and feelings about all things cinematic than The Liverpool Everyman Theatre?
Indeed, such is the popularity of Mayo & Kermode’s Friday afternoon, BBC Radio 5 Live slot – in which the latest releases and older variances and news in the film world are discussed and debated (with Kermode usually winning, in all fairness) – an extra matinee was called for, which saw the audiences held captive as the two experts chatted about the brilliance (or otherwise) of Spectre, what The Exorcist is really about (it isn’t, apparently, what you may have been led to believe) and where Shawshank Redemption should really end.
All of which was deftly handled with not a little humour, which was never patronising , always richly entertaining and without ANY of the bells and whistles that other shows might rely on for effect … just simple, honest opinion that makes for a stand up show with a difference that simply crackles with bon homie.
