Located on Parr Street, Almost Famous is a slight walk away from the City Centre and the restaurants at Liverpool One, but if you’re looking for something a little different and a place with more character then it’s definitely worth the walk.
We arrived on a Wednesday evening at around 6pm and the place was only half full, meaning there was no wait for a table. I was with 4 other people, so the staff happily pushed two tables together for us to sit down and eat.
The restaurant has a grunge/mock American diner theme, with graffiti covering all walls. We spotted characters from Looney Tunes, Mickey Mouse and even a giant portrait of the Marshmallow Man from Ghost Busters.
After reading the menu and having a giggle about the names of some of the items on offer – “neck me dead hard shots” and a cocktail called “B*tchjuice” – we ordered our food. I must highlight however that there are no vegetarian options on the menu unfortunately, which caused a slight problem for my friend when ordering.
Other than that the only other problem with the menu is that it’s so short – there are 9 burger options and 3 “not burger” options, and when you read the amazing concoctions that this place creates, it’s a shame there’s not more of it!
I chose the Wonderland Burger and the Bacon Bacon fries, and neither disappointed. The prices are a little high for burger joint but you definitely get enough food for what you pay for – I couldn’t finish my fries because I was so full.
The food arrived and was displayed in American-diner style red baskets exactly like you see on TV, one for the burger and one for the massive portion of fries. Honestly I would advise to share a portion of fries rather than have one for yourself because for the amount you’re paying (up to £5), you don’t want to be leaving half uneaten.
The burgers are huge – layered with toppings piled so high it’s difficult to eat them without getting food everywhere, but that’s all part of the experience!
I tried two of the drinks from the menu – a milkshake and a cocktail. The milkshake I ordered was ‘Camp Out’ and made with marshmallow and chocolate. It was great, although the marshmallow used to garnish didn’t taste quite as nice, and the majority of the glass was filled with cream rather than an actual drink.
After eating I tried the Bubbleicious Mojito – the most childish of all drinks – and it was really amazing; although the glass again was mostly filled with ice.
Overall, Almost Famous is a hidden gem well worth visiting – however, the prices can be slightly overwhelming and options are limited, with there being more drink options than food despite the food being much more satisfying than the drinks.
