The week in gaming: inc. Final Fantasy XV, Star Wars Battlefront and more

Here are some of the main talking points from in this edition of The Week in Gaming.

Monday 19th October

Galak-Z is no longer a Playstation 4 exclusive following the news that the planned Vita version has been cancelled and the game will now also launch on Steam. Developer 17-Bit has confirmed the game will be available to download 29th October 2015. Galak-Z’s mobile version is still in production for next year.

Tuesday 20th October

William Pugh, The Stanley Parable, has created a new studio called Crows Crows Crows. It appears his first act has been to tease an upcoming game that’s “due quite imminently”. Though little information is currently available some believe the game could be an ambiguous ARG.

Frogwares has announced Sherlock Holmes: The Devil’s Daughter, aiming for a spring 2016 release on PS4, Xbox One and PC. The game will incorporate a variety of gameplay mechanics including; puzzle solving and reflex-based action sequences. There are suggestions of an open-world environment as players can, “freely roam an expansive landscape of playable terrain.”

It has been confirmed Han Solo, Princess Leia and Emperor Palpatine are playable characters in the upcoming Star Wars Battlefront.

Wednesday 21st October

The final instalment of Telltale’s Game of Thrones will be released 17th November 2015, thus concluding the episodic download series, launching simultaneously worldwide on all platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, PC, Mac, iOS and Android.

5th Cell, Scribblenauts and Drawn to Life developer, has begun a crowd funding campaign on Fig for Anchors in the Drift, a free-to-play action-RPG. Anchors is an isometric dungeon crawler wherein the plot focuses on a future earth following an invasion by an inter-dimensional empire called the Domain.

Time has been altered which in turn transforms the world into a “quantum ocean” full of islands representing various civilizations throughout history.

Sony has announced a PS4 price-cut in the UK. The new RRP of the 500GB PS4 is £299.99.

Thursday 22nd October

Activision is to invest in video game sports leagues within the formation of a company division entirely dedicated to eSports. Steve Bornstein, former ESPN boss, and Mike Sepso, MLG President, will front the new enterprise and Bornstein firmly believes eSports will, “rival the biggest traditional sports leagues in terms of future opportunities, and between advertising, ticket sales, licensing, sponsorships and merchandising, there are tremendous growth areas for this nascent industry.”

The developers of Goat Simulator and I Am Bread are collaborating on a new GoatBread-themed DLC. As a result both indie games will receive new DLC packages based on this crossover within the next few weeks.

Prepare for pun fun as I Am Bread gets a new RAMpage mode where as Goat Simulator will feature a playable piece of bread. Both updates will be free via Steam with other platforms yet to be announced.

Friday 23rd October

Eagle-eyed gamers, for some reason, have noticed Final Fantasy XV’s main characters dress in black. To clarify the reason as to why game director Hajime Tabata wrote on the game’s official forum, “the clothing worn by the four main characters is the official battle gear of the Kingdom of Lucis.”

Mystery solved.

Double Fine has revealed new in-game images of Day of the Tentacle Remastered. This marks the second time the studio has restored a classic point and click adventure from Tim Schafer, Double Fine’s founder, when he was still working at Lucasarts. Earlier this year Double Fine provided the HD treatment to Schafer’s Mexican noir classic Grim Fandango. This restoration will feature; all new hand-drawn, high-res artwork along with remastered audio, music and sound effects.

A commentary track by the game’s original creators: Tim Schafer, Dave Grossman, Larry Ahern, Peter Chan, Peter McConnell and Clint Bajakian will also be included.
