A new look for Barbie has been created… in shape of the androgynous Ziggy Stardust.
This new version of the toy celebrates the 50th anniversary of the release of David Bowie’s album Space Oddity, released in 1969.
The doll’s look pays homage to one of David Bowie’s most iconic alter egos: Ziggy Stardust.
Ziggy was described by the singer as a rock star who communicates with extra-terrestrial beings, in the face of a coming apocalypse on Earth.
The character made his debut in 1972 with the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars.
Although this Bowie alter-ego was intended as an experiment, the singer became swept up by the persona and started asking the press to call him Ziggy.
He later admitted that the character was taking over his personality.
The new Barbie wears a metallic Ziggy space suit with red and blue stripes, flared shoulders and cherry red platform boots.
Her dark red hair is styled to looks like Ziggy Stardust’s and her forehead is imprinted with his signature golden circle.
Mattel, the multinational toy manufacturing company that produces Barbie, described David Bowie as “The pioneer of sound and vision whose music continues to show the world how to reach for the stars.”
The $50 (39£), limited edition doll is also released with a doll stand and a Certificate of Authenticity, and has been created in collaboration with The David Bowie Archive.
