After two weeks and 35 million unique plays, Twitch users have beat Pokemon Red. The online phenomenon soared to fame almost overnight and proved to be a revolution in game play.
But, if you didn’t get a chance to play, or if you want to see more, head back over to Twitch to see the team try to battle their way through Pokemon Crystal.
The new game was set up just 24 hours after Red was completed. The players already have three of the gym badges and are well on their way to completing the game.
Whether this game will remain as popular as the original is not certain, but the experience as a whole can be looked at as a peek into the future of gaming.
Matthew DiPietro, Vice President of Marketing at Twitch says that this whole experiment shows “how video games have become a platform for entertainment and creativity that extends way beyond the original intent of the game creator.”
With Pokemon Crystal lasting twice as long as Pokemon Red in it’s game play, the team certainly has a harder challenge ahead.
Twitch plays Pokemon has sparked a large fan base across the internet, including a forum on Reddit and even an extension on Google Chrome that will send you updates of the game via Reddit notifications.
The anonymous creator explained how he didn’t expect the game to become so popular and how he didn’t even expect the team to beat it. He says, “I’d like to see the Elite Four beaten but I have my doubts about it being possible without much better coordination.”
However, Twitch have expressed interest in using the experiment as a permanent game streaming feature on the website.
