MADNICE Marauders presents DJ Format this Friday with their newest instalment for the next generation of hip-hop culture to grace Liverpool.

Kicking things off at the beginning of the year, the MADNICE crew have showcased a series of events in The Hold, at the Shipping Forecast, ranging from a J Dilla tribute night, to hosting Kutmah and Mr Thing, all to the delight of a rapidly growing audience.

We caught up with the brains behind the events, Adam McAleavey to get his take on all things hip-hop and what MADNICE has in mind for the city in the upcoming months.

Adam said: “Hip-hop as a culture was always something I was drawn to growing up. I’d travel up and down the country to live shows and spend hours listening to new releases and classics.

“It got to the point where I realised that, despite a solid club scene in Liverpool, there was nothing appealing to the hip-hop heads. We found ourselves making pilgrimages to Manchester and London to see live gigs and DJ’s and I wanted to try and bring something back to the city.”

Contacts that Adam had made over the years from attending gigs and buying music were invaluable in setting up MADNICE.

He added: “I mentioned creating a hip-hop club night to the No Fakin’ crew and they’ve been down with the idea since day one. They help spin on the nights as residents and have given me a hand behind the scenes, offering over 15 years of invaluable experience and allowing me to meet the right people.”

When considering the growth of hip-hop culture, Adam stresses that it is important not to dismiss what is currently emerging: “If you look deep enough, you’ll find there are still artists trying to uphold the traditions that the old school hip-hop heads grew up with.

“I’d like to think MADNICE gives a nod to the traditions of hip-hop whilst showcasing the emerging beat scene that has evolved from the rich history.

“The response to all the gigs has been overwhelming- it’s nice to say we’re bringing DMC champions and Los Angeles beat legends back to Liverpool. Come September, we hope to have a full line-up of DJs who will help up build on the community we already have in Liverpool.

“We will be throwing a record fair this summer with No Fakin’ so won’t be away for long. Our residents SertOne and Bolts are making great music right now and with the MADNICE crew being vinyl enthusiasts, the next logical step is to set up a record label showcasing the best of what our family and friends are doing right now… watch this space!”

The MADNICE crew can be found this Friday, 25th in The Hold, Shipping Forecast from 11pm-3am.
