Liverpool’s only dry bar and café The Brink is celebrating ‘Make a Difference Day’ (October 28) by highlighting the ways in which it can help and support the local community.

Established in 2011, The Brink was set up to offer a safe, stigma-free and supportive place for those in the recovery community, acting as the flagship social enterprise of national charity Action on Addiction.

The Parr Street venue provides a wide range of activities, events and courses to encourage health and wellbeing on a daily basis including Tai Chi and Morning Meditation.

Head of Service at Action on Addiction Merseyside Karen Hemmings said: “Our focus here at The Brink is to encourage both recovery and general wellbeing for all those who visit us, which is why we felt it was so important to offer the people of Liverpool a refuge of advice, community and friendship – not only to mark Make a Difference Day, but as part of our ethos every day.

“We provide support and guidance for on-going personal development with an array of social activities such as art and yoga, motivational coaching circles and football training in addition to one-to-one counselling and group support. In addition to our recovery services, The Brink regularly hosts events that are open to all, offering unique experiences to promote social inclusion and wellbeing in some form or another, without the presence of alcohol. For example, our ‘Feeling Better Through Comedy’ offering is part of the wider Recovery College programme, which hosts a range of workshops such as understanding anxiety, depression and self-esteem.”

The Brink also hosts various support sessions including ‘The Brink of Change’, which is a pre-abstinence group for those wanting to make the move into abstinence based recovery from drug and alcohol misuse, and ‘Family Support Group’ to benefit people with relatives or close friends in active addiction or recovery.

Karen added: “The results following a return on investment study by LJMU showed that for every £1 spent at The Brink, £5 is returned in social impact, which is a testament to the impact that the venue has on the local community.

“Since opening in 2011, we’re proud to say that The Brink has been central to the recovery journey of many across the North West. With Make a Difference Day coming up, we want to ensure that those who need help or guidance are aware of the extensive services that are available at The Brink – because we really can make a difference.”
