After sailing over a few rocky reefs, Disney have abandoned their voyage to remake The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine.
Oscar-winning director Robert Zemeckis was at the helm of this 3D performance-capture remake of the band’s 1968 psychedelic classic.
Sources suggest that the decision to abandon ship is the result of the disastrous bock office sales of the Zemeckis-produced Mars Needs Moms. The movie recently grossed $6.9 million (£4.3 million) in the US – despite a budget of $150 million (£90 million).
But Disney chiefs have denied that this was the iceberg that would see that it never reached land, stating that the decision was made months ago.
The new Yellow Submarine would have featured The Beatles’ music, with plans for the Fab Four to be played by Cary Elwes, Dean Lennox Kelly, Peter Serafinowicz and Adam Campbell.
It is not yet clear whether Zemeckis will now shop the project round to other studios.
But were Disney right to bin the project? Would they have lost the original spirit of the Fab Four’s feverish visions, or reinforce them in the hearts of a whole new generation? Epic sail, or doomed to sink?
