An incredible archive of images capturing the rising metropolis of New York have gone on display for the first time giving a global audience an intimate view, documenting life in the city.

The collection of more than 870,000 photos from an archive that exceeds 2.2 million images have been scanned and made available online.

They range from all periods in history – but some of the best were taken by Eugene de Salignac, a NYC Transit photographer with a keen artistic eye for framing an image, who worked for the authority between 1906 and 1934.
