Last most eager Mortal Kombat fans heard, Warner Bros. (the geezers who now own the rights over the Mortal Kombat franchise) were looking to reboot the classic gorefest fighting game and were eager to start work on a new movie.
Whilst most internet fan boys were quick to speculate that with E3 – one of the World’s biggest games expos – being a week away, the trailer was possibly a mere teaser for a new game, the theory that it was either a trailer for a new movie or a project developed to entice the attention of Warner Bros. grew momentum on internet chat forums.
Boasting bona-fide actors such as Jeri Ryan (Star Trek Voyager), the eight minute short is a dark, brooding effort in the style of horror detective dramas such as Seven or the original Saw, and boy is it gory as all hell – receiving the mass adulatory thumbs up it deserves off gamers across the globe.
However, Ryan – who plays Sonya Blade in the project – took to her twitter to explain that the short film was actually created as the director’s pitch to Warner Bros.:
“It’s not a game trailer. Actually was made for the director to sell WB on his vision for a reimagined MK film,”
“I did it as a favor to a friend. No idea yet what WB’s reaction to it was.”
