YouTuber Gary Turk has taken over the internet with his spoken word performance, telling us all to off our phones and computers in order to enjoy the real world.

Look Up has received 20 million views in just under two weeks, with a video that gives a powerful message about how our generation is living life through the screens of our devices.

The video was written, directed and performed by Gary Turk and in it he delivers a spoken word poem telling us how our devices are taking over our lives, as well as clips of how much we use them.

‘The media we call social is anything but.’

He explains how using social media websites alienates us instead of connecting us and how talking through a screen is diminishing the joy we get from talking face to face and actually enjoying other people’s company.

He tells us how we are living life to impress our online friends instead of experiencing it for ourselves.

He also explains how it’s affecting younger generations and our relationship with them.

‘it’s not very likely you’ll make world’s greatest dad, if you can’t entertain a child without an iPad.’

He says how it isn’t right that we show children that it’s ok to lock yourself away from the real world and ‘act like robots.’

Spending time alone isn’t a bad thing he says, as long as it’s productive, like going to the gym or reading a book.

The video is just under five minutes long but really makes you think about what is important and with the final message of the video explaining that you could miss out on amazing opportunities if you don’t simply look up from your screen, it’s enough to make you want to put down your devices and get out there making memories with the people that matter, not people on the other side of a screen.
