Yogis are famous for their chilled and laid-back demeanour. All that chanting and meditation makes you more mellow and able to take life just as it comes.
Whether we are go-getters in business and in life, or the type who need a good kick in the yoga pants to get on task, we all have those days where we need some motivation.
Top tips for laid back yogis:
1) Be a Zen like Buddha
While we might not want to encourage a laid back yogi to be even more zen like, it’s actually never a bad thing. Mainly because taking things steady can help you win the race.
Plus even being a laid back yogi, you no doubt sometimes get excited about things, and charge into projects and poses.
But somewhere along the line, you lose your momentum. The excitement wanes when hard work sets in, and that’s when good yogis get lethargic.
So before you wear yourself out, take some time to warm up to your tasks, the way you do when you hop on the mat and prepare your body for a long and warming session. If you set the pace, you’ll stay in the race.
2) Grab a partner
The old adage goes, there’s strength in numbers and it’s true. A pair of laid back yogis will get twice as much done… sometimes.
So your second tip for beating the lazy yogi blues is to find a buddy and inspire and motivate one another. Find someone with similar goals and a bit more drive than you have. Let that person challenge you and keep you from all day Savasana.
3) Make it fun
Laid back yogis are notorious for putting off unpleasant tasks. Which asanas make you wince? The key to making those tough poses or any hard work less daunting, is to find some aspect that is actually fun and add some excitement whenever possible.
For example, create a home practice that mixes restorative poses with those that bring the burn. There are plenty of ways to make work more fun.
4) Become a Compulsive Liar
If you over think anything you find hard, you never start it. Say you want to start a run before your morning yoga. You’re geared up the night before and set your alarm before jumping into bed for a long zen like sleep.
But when the alarm goes and your body stays still, that jog suddenly seems a bad idea. This is when you should become a compulsive liar and start telling yourself: “I’m just heading out for a quick jaunt, a walk to the mailbox perhaps, no more.”
When you reach your destination, you smooth talk yourself into heading farther down the road, to the end of the block.
So what’s a laid back yogi to do at this festive time of year? You don’t have to hit a studio. How about heading to the mat in your pjs? Your Christmas socks and jumper are fine and dandy for home practice. A yogi is a yogi, lycra or not.
