Joining the trend of celebrities currently trying to connect with fans in new ways, and make some kind of positive change to the world, Kathleen Hanna, front woman of Bikini Kill, Le Tigre, and The Julie Ruin, has now joined Cameo. The online platform is used by musicians, actors, online influencers, and anyone else who has fans, to have fans pay anywhere from a few dollars, to a few hundred dollars, for a private, personal message, also known as a ’cameo’, from the celebrity or influencer.
Kathleen let fans know about her new profile on social media last night, talking about it in a video with a heavy filter on it as her ‘ode to technology’, as well as suggesting they can use it for anything from a birthday shout out for themselves, a mothers day gift, to send a message to a friend, or to ask for advice.
Most celebrities, and influencers, keep the money they make of cameo, to do whatever people with a lot of money do with a bunch more money, but Kathleen Hanna has never been quite like other celebrities. All proceed raised by her through cameo will be donated to Peace Sisters.
In an introduction video uploaded to cameo, Kathleen explains that the $40 (£83) spent on her cameo messages, will be used by the non-profit organisation Peace Sisters, to send a girl in Togo, West Africa, to school for an entire year. Sending a girl to school for a whole year, and getting a personal video message from the feminist icon, seems to be a pretty good deal.
Kathleen isn’t the only iconic woman of the 90’s punk scene currently offering videos on cameo though, L7 front woman Donita Sparks is also offering birthday wishes, and messages from friends on the platform, along with a multitude of other rockers, including Marky Ramone of The Ramones.
Though she only has 2 reviews so far, the requests are sure to roll in soon, so if you want a message from the musician you’re likely best heading to cameo and booking it now!
