Liverpool is calling all families to step into a world of colour, music, and heritage with “It’s Carnival Time – Superheroes of Resistance!”

A free, creative celebration of Caribbean Carnival, the workshops take place at the African and Caribbean Centre, L8, on 27th and 30th October 2025.

Led by Ithalia Johnson and Sophie Caines, these interactive sessions invite participants of all ages to explore the vibrant traditions of Carnival while uncovering its roots in resistance, joy, and community.

Across two days of performance, discussion, and hands-on creativity, families will dive deep into Liverpool’s first Caribbean Carnival of 1978, discovering its historic significance and enduring cultural impact.

Attendees can:

  • Watch performances from The Untold Stories of a Carnival Queen

  • Take part in creative discussions about Carnival’s heritage, resistance, and celebration

  • Express themselves through dance, song, and costume-making

  • Design and bring to life their own Superhero of Resistance, inspired by the legendary Blue Devil characters of Trinidad & Tobago

Workshops run:

  • Monday 27 October, 10am – 4pm

  • Thursday 30 October, 5pm – 7pm

Participants will learn dance moves, songs, and costume techniques that prepare them to join the Katumba Halloween Carnival Parade on 31 October at 7pm, bringing their creations into the streets in a spectacle of colour and creativity.

These workshops are free and open to all, though booking is essential via Eventbrite. Adults or guardians must accompany children under 14.

Whether you’re looking to introduce your little ones to the magic of Carnival, reconnect with Caribbean heritage, or simply celebrate creativity in community, “It’s Carnival Time – Superheroes of Resistance!” is the perfect way to do it.
