Chibuku on the warpath with High Contrast, Kele Okereke and Joker

Chibuku have really gone and pushed the envelope this time. A glorious combination of live music and DJ sets, it’s indicative of why Chibuku’s unrivalled festival style clubbing continues to dominate in the twenty first century.

Topping the bill in The Theatre is none other than Bloc Party’s irrepressible front man Kele Okereke.

As the voice of the band, Kele gave the group a youthful front which emphasised the jerky grooves that underpinned the dancier aesthetic of their music.

Whilst collaboration with the Chemical Brothers (the sumptuous Believe) hinted at a greater love of electronica, it wasn’t until debut album, The Boxer, dropped that we really saw the eclecticism of Kele’s personality.

To say the support is impressive would be an understatement. Alongside Kele will be the euphoric drum n bass of Hospital Records’ High Contrast, the superlative electronica of Hudson Mohawke and local music legend Revo.

But wait. There’s more. Another two rooms more…

Upstairs sees some mutant wobble as Joker gets physical in the Loft. Last time he shared the limelight as part of September’s grand re-opening alongside Benga, this occasion the Bristol native being solely responsible for headline duties.

His DJ sets are synonymous with the precision of his productions, the crystalline snares and drum kicks of Tron following on from the dubplate pressure of Gully Brook Lane and Snake Eater.

He’s joined by turntable wizards the Scratch Perverts. The SPs have been down with Chibuku since the year dot, following a similar musical metamorphosis as the club and now skittering across dancehall, hip-hop, drum n bass, dubstep, house and electro.

Jack Knife beats sitting side by side with lightening technical wizardry, Scratch Perverts remain Chibuku’s doyens of DJ dexterity. Rich Furness’ hot-footing genre havoc serves as the warm up.

And the final tenet sees some very special vibes pulsating from disco duo Tiger & Woods in Ink.

Their recent Resident Advisor podcast was an exemplary lesson in how djing should be, lashings of their own edits, obvious samples sitting side by side with rare grooves and enough finger clicking funk to start a riot.
