Bill Harry’s advice for emerging talent

Bill Harry, founder of Mersey Beat newspaper, believes young musicians should make the most of the internet if they want to break into the music industry.

Harry was the publisher of the hugely influential Mersey Beat music newspaper in the 1960s before acting as publicist to legendary artists such as Pink Floyd, the Beach Boys, Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull and David Bowie.

He was speaking at the launch of his new book ‘Bigger Than The Beatles’ which uncovers Liverpool’s musical odyssey beyond the hysteria that surrounded The Beatles during the 1960s.

The Liverpool native believes that young musicians looking to break into the industry must make use of the tools available to them, telling Purple Revolver: “Opening up for them is all kinds of ways to promote themselves.

“A lot of it’s on the computer with all these new things which they can announce and put their own sounds on and build it up.

“I think a computer is a pathway because I think the days of the record company are drawing to a close.”
