A little something to restore faith in humanity

In the past year a group of kind hearted people have been helping Liverpool’s homeless, by venturing out with food, drinks and warm clean clothing.

The group called Glad Bags, wish to remain an anonymous as they don’t want praise for their work, but simply see it was a way to promote helping the homeless.

The group was founded last year by a student after an eye opening conversation with a homeless man. That evening the teenager told her mum that she wouldn’t be home much anymore as she wanted to be out helping those in need.

Ever since then the ever growing team are preparing food, making hot drinks, sorting through donations and pounding the pavement several times per week to help those most at risk.

A member of the group said: “Of course we cater to their physical needs such as food and clothes but what we think that the most important this is building up a relationship with them. We find out what their stories are, we don’t just see them once then leave them. We’re working
towards getting some people into rehab, and some even now work for us who used to be on the streets!”

The work this and many other groups do, is vital as the homeless population is ever growing with one member saying: “When we first started it was around 20 to 30 people a night, the last time we went out, it was so busy with around 70 people!”

This isn’t just an off the hand comment, in fact this year’s homelessness is at the highest it’s been since government records began six years ago.
